Pain Facts 1 – Do we have pain sensors?

11/09/2022Pain Facts 2 - Map of the body in our brain.
In recognition of International Pain Awareness Month of September 2022, Paragon PsychConnect presents three Pain Facts. During September, the International Association for the Study of Pain raises public awareness around pain and pain management.
Our body is represented as a map in our brain (both sensory and motor homunculus).
The representation of each body part is determined by how many nerves are in that area and how much information is received/given. This body map is (mostly) the same across all people.
However, if you use the body part more, e.g., piano player using their hands, the representation is larger than an average person and may go a long way to explaining why a paper cut may hurt more for them.
