03/10/2024Reel Fun Fridays: Fishing, Friendship, and Fresh Air!
(otherwise known as “The Double Header Fishing Group”)
"Reel Fun Fridays" is an initiative by Paragon PsychConnect that combines fishing, friendship, and fresh air to promote mental well-being. This program offers participants the opportunity to engage in outdoor activities, fostering social connections and relaxation.
Every Friday morning, I mentor a small group of wonderful people who gather at Grange Jetty for a relaxing and fun-filled fishing session. However, sometimes I think they mentor me!!!
From coffee and great conversation to the excitement of casting a line in hopes of catching a big fish-like Tuna, Salmon, or even a giant squid, these mornings are full of laughter and camaraderie. While we haven't quite reeled in those trophy fish yet, we've had plenty of success with Salmon Trout, Tommies, and the occasional pesky but beautiful cowfish.
The group doesn't just enjoy each other's company; they also wander the jetty, chatting with locals, giving their dogs treats and generally sharing a laugh with fellow fishers, and soaking in the sense of community.
On occasion, we change things up by heading to other jetties or taking day trips to places like Rapid Bay, and we're planning a half-day fishing charter soon to pursue our dream of catching bigger fish.
Fishing offers more than just a good time. It's a wonderful way to connect with nature, soak up some vitamin D, and practice mindfulness in a calming outdoor setting. Whether it's a perfectly clear day or a foggy, windy challenge, our group takes it all in stride, enjoying the sensory experience, even when stepping outside their comfort zone. If the weather gets too wild, we pivot to activities like visiting museums, art galleries, exploring the central market, or even creating terrariums back at the office.
The real beauty of this group, though, is the sense of inclusivity and connection. Beyond learning fishing techniques, our participants build social skills, engage with the local community, and form genuine relationships with familiar faces, like the barista who knows our coffee orders and the locals who fish alongside us each week. The group is always welcoming new members, creating a safe and open space where everyone can express themselves without fear of judgment.
If you’re looking for a friendly, supportive environment to enjoy the outdoors, meet new people, and have some fun, feel free to join us, we’d love to see you there!
