07/07/2025Before You Buy Another Sleep Gadget
A Psychologist’s Perspective
If you’ve been tossing and turning at night, you're not alone. Our expert strategies can help you improve sleep quality and reclaim restful nights.
The Very Expensive Sleep Gadget
The other night, mid-scroll and half-asleep, I stumbled across a very expensive sleep gadget. One that promised perfect temperatures, smart sleep cycles, and better rest than I’ve had since childhood. The price tag? Close to $7,000!
In a world full of blue light blockers, sleep supplements, fancy trackers, and temperature-controlled mattresses, it’s easy to think sleep is something we need to buy our way into. But here’s the truth: you already have some of the most powerful tools to improve your sleep, and the best part is … they’re free!
Before you invest in high-tech sleep solutions, let’s talk about what really helps. Because better sleep doesn’t always come from more data or gear. It often starts with small, sustainable shifts in behaviour and mindset.
Sleep Isn’t a Performance Sport (but we’re treating it like one)
Sleep isn’t something you win at, it’s something your brain does naturally when you allow it to.
In fact, the more we try to sleep, the harder it gets. Research shows that people with insomnia often develop “performance anxiety” about sleep. They lie in bed, watching the clock, getting frustrated … and all of that worry activates the brain, keeping sleep even further out of reach.
There’s also a lot of misinformation out there. For example:
- You don’t need exactly 8 hours - Most adults need between 7 and 9, but it’s flexible. (see it nicely put in the Sleep Health Foundations fact sheet: https://www.sleephealthfoundation.org.au/sleep-topics/how-much-sleep-do-you-really-need)
- Waking at night is normal - Brief awakenings during the night are part of healthy sleep.
- Tracking can backfire - For some people, constantly analysing their sleep makes things worse!
Sleep Strategies
When we treat sleep like a task to optimise, we lose sight of its purpose: restoration. Sleep isn’t earned with productivity or purchased with tech, it’s a rhythm your body already knows, if you create the right conditions.
So, what are those conditions?
The most powerful sleep strategies don’t come in a bottle or an app. They come from tuning into your body and reshaping the way you support sleep across your whole day.
Some of the best places to start include:
- Waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends. It anchors your body clock.
- Getting light in the morning. Natural sunlight helps set your circadian rhythm and tells your brain when to release melatonin later.
- Not lying in bed awake for hours. If sleep’s not happening, get up, do something boring, and try again when you’re sleepy. We don’t want our brain associating our bed with being awake!
- Bring some movement and activity into your day. As long as it’s not right before bed, exercise and movement during the day helps us sleep at night.
Sleep Therapy
And if you lie awake with a busy brain? You’re not alone. Many people find that sleep struggles are actually mind struggles, including a racing mind, worry about the next day, or pressure to sleep “perfectly.” That’s where Psychologists can play a powerful role.
Psychologists trained in sleep health don’t just give you general advice, they offer targeted support using evidence-based approaches like CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia).
This therapy works by:
- Reframing unhelpful sleep thoughts (“If I don’t sleep, I’ll fail tomorrow”).
- Reducing anxiety and overthinking at bedtime.
- Restructuring sleep routines and associations (so your bed stops feeling like a battleground).
- Addressing underlying stress, burnout, or emotional health that might be affecting your sleep.

At ParagonPsych Connect
Our SOMNI Sleep Therapy Program helps people understand their sleep, shift unhelpful patterns, and learn what their body needs to rest well, with no expensive gadgets required.
You don’t need to spend thousands to fix your sleep. You need light, rhythm, movement, a calm mind, and sometimes, a bit of help to get back in sync with what your body already knows how to do.
