My 20-Year Journey Through Menopause
Navigating menopause is more than a physical change – it’s an emotional, mental, and spiritual journey. In this blog, I share my 20-year menopause journey, offering real stories, lessons, and encouragement for women seeking understanding and support.
As Women’s Health Week begins (September 1–7, 2025), it's the perfect time to share a story that many women might relate to – mine.
Menopause Isn’t a One-Size-Fits-All
I entered menopause at age 42, an early transition that caught me off guard. My GP initially suggested it was probably my under active thyroid but at worst could be perimenopause, but when she rang and said, “not perimenopausal – you are in menopause,” I was stunned. It felt like a blow, but also an explanation – finally making sense of the relentless 180 hot flushes a day, night sweats, and mood swings I was enduring.
In Australia, the average age of menopause is around 51–52, but early menopause (before age 45) occurs in about 5%, and premature menopause (before age 40) in roughly 1%. My diagnosis was on the earlier side, making clarity all the more important.
Interestingly, I also had a slow (underactive) thyroid, which can mimic or amplify menopausal symptoms – another layer of complexity many women encounter.
Before Menopause: IVF, Dreams & Resilience
Just months before, I had visited IVF specialists, considering motherhood solo after parting ways with a husband who didn’t want kids. That dream quietly faded. Then my current partner, Tony, entered my life – steadfastly supportive, absorbing the science, and lovingly offering advice to others navigating menopause through his gym network. He became my partner-expert in this chapter.
Hormone Replacement Therapy: My Lifeline (Without Side Effects)
I’ve been on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for 20 years, now in my early 60s – and I feel fabulous:
- Excellent bone density, showing the protective benefits of HRT.
- Minimal hot flushes, stable mood, and boundless energy.
- No wrinkles yet – though I’ll credit my genes as well as the HRT.
Recent updates affirm that menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) – synonymous with HRT – is the most effective treatment for menopausal symptoms and is especially recommended for women experiencing premature ovarian insufficiency, unless contraindicated.
Moreover, when initiated relatively early (like I did), studies show benefits in reducing all-cause mortality, as well as cardiovascular disease, bone fractures, and dementia risks, while balancing recognized but modest risks.
Personalized, Safe, and Long-Term Care
My gynaecologist assured me I could remain on HRT for life, as I have no contraindications – no family history of breast cancer, I don’t smoke, and drink very socially. That aligns well with current guidelines emphasising individualized care and ongoing risk–benefit discussion.
Indeed, the recent Menopause Essentials Update 2025 (by AMS) provides updated guidance on hormonal and non-hormonal strategies, risk management, and structured consultations.
Beyond Medication: Lifestyle Matters
HRT has been transformative, but it's part of a holistic approach:
- Lifestyle: Exercise, healthy eating, low alcohol intake – these enhance well-being and lessen symptoms.
- Healthcare engagement: A strong, informed GP or menopause specialist can make a world of difference – especially in the face of lingering misconceptions about HRT.
- Advocacy and education: Systemic challenges remain – women are still sometimes dismissed or mislabeled as “mad and sad,” and access to accurate information and care is uneven. Efforts like Medicare rebates for menopause health assessments and public awareness campaigns are steps forward.
