Peta’s Journey Back to Work
Motor vehicle accident recovery isn’t just about healing—it’s about hope, teamwork, and resilience. Peta’s story shows how the right support can turn setbacks into triumphs.
In my decades as a psychologist, there are moments that reaffirm exactly why I chose this profession. Recently, I had the privilege of working alongside an exceptional team—a group of dedicated professionals united by a single purpose: helping one determined client reclaim her life.
In personal injury recovery, true success isn’t just about excellent medical care or a motivated client; it’s about collaboration, empathy, and a shared commitment to the best possible outcome. This experience was a powerful reminder of how transformative that synergy can be—and it’s a story worth sharing, because it shows what’s possible when the client, treatment team, insurer, and employer all pull together toward the same goal.
The Challenge
Peta (not her real name) was involved in a severe motor vehicle accident (MVA) that left her with a major knee injury requiring surgery. The surgeon’s prognosis was devastating:
“You’ll never return to your job. Find another type of sedentary work.”
For Peta, this news was crushing. She loved her job as a Trades Assistant—physically demanding work, but for her, it was pure magic. She had just begun an adult welding apprenticeship and was thriving in her role. Her employer, who deeply valued her skills and dedication, was incredibly supportive. Still, the thought of never returning to the work she loved felt unbearable.
The Turning Point: The Power of a Great Case Manager
Enter Will P from AAMI.
In Peta’s own words: “Will is lovely. He really cares—he wants to help me get better.”
Will didn’t just process paperwork; he walked alongside Peta throughout her journey. He checked in regularly, actioned requests quickly, and stayed closely involved—even while coordinating with Procare and the broader treatment team. Importantly, Andrew S, AAMI leadership, empowered him to do what was needed to help Peta get back on track, and that support made all the difference.
A Team Effort
Every member of Peta’s recovery team played a part in the magic:
- Her employer – flexible, understanding, and committed to supporting Peta’s safe return.
- Dr Max, her GP – consistently going “above and beyond,” earning his well-deserved 5-star reputation.
- Mel, our Driver Active8 Counsellor – equipping Peta with the tools to overcome her fear of driving.
- Her physio and allied health team – providing evidence-based rehab that targeted strength and function.
- Peta herself – the heart of the story, refusing to accept limitations and working tirelessly toward her recovery.
The Outcome
Fast forward to today:
- Back at work – just four weeks after being told she’d never return.
- Driving confidently – using the strategies Mel taught her.
- Reclaiming her independence and purpose – proving that with the right mindset and support, barriers can be broken.
This is more than a successful claim; it’s a testament to what happens when everyone believes in the same goal – restoring not just health, but quality of life.
Lessons Learned
Peta’s story reinforces what we in rehabilitation and insurance know but sometimes forget:
- A motivated client with clear goals is unstoppable.
- A responsive, hands-on Case Manager can make or break the outcome.
- Open communication between the client, treatment team, insurer, and employer is non-negotiable.
- Belief matters – when everyone believes recovery is possible, it often becomes reality.
A Call to the Industry
This is the standard we should strive for in personal injury insurance:
- Clients who feel heard and supported.
- Teams who are aligned and proactive.
- Leadership that empowers people like Will P to do their best work.
Because when that happens, lives are changed – not just for clients like Peta, but for everyone involved in their journey.
Peta’s motor vehicle accident recovery highlights the power of teamwork, resilience, and professional support in helping her rebuild her life and return to work.
To Peta: congratulations on your grit and determination. You’ve reminded us all why we do what we do.
To Will P, Andrew S and the AAMI team: thank you for showing the industry what true client-centered care looks like.
