Men's Health Week 9-15 June 2025
Seeing your GP regularly isn't just about addressing current ailments; it's a crucial strategy for early detection and prevention of potential health issues.
Each June, Men’s Health Week offers an opportunity to reflect on the wellbeing of the men in our lives — our partners, fathers, sons, friends, and colleagues.
This year’s theme, See Your GP, emphasizes the importance of regular check-ups and preventative care to reduce avoidable illnesses through early intervention.
The Challenge
Two-thirds of Australian men delay seeing a doctor when they notice a health issue, often attempting to manage it themselves or waiting until it worsens. This hesitation leads to missed opportunities for early intervention, turning manageable concerns into more serious, harder-to-treat problems.
In my sessions with male clients, I frequently hear:
- “I just go to whoever’s available at the clinic.”
- “I don’t really have a regular doctor.”
- “It’s no big deal – it doesn’t matter who I see.”
- “I hate waiting around, so I only go if I really have to.”
- “There are no doctors around … to get a regular GP”.
This casual approach might work for minor issues, but when it comes to mental health, heart health, cancer screening, and chronic disease management, consistency is crucial. Without a GP who knows your medical history, subtle signs can be overlooked, and there's no opportunity to build the trust necessary for effective care.
The Gender Gap in GP Engagement
Statistics reveal a significant disparity between men and women in healthcare engagement. In 2023–24, 87.3% of Australian women saw a GP, compared to 77.7% of men. Women also tend to have a regular GP, facilitating ongoing care and early detection of health issues.
This consistent engagement allows for better monitoring of health changes and more personalized care. In contrast, men often lack a regular GP, leading to fragmented care and missed opportunities for early intervention.
The Importance of a Regular GP
Having a regular GP is not just about convenience; it's about building a relationship with a healthcare professional who understands your medical history, lifestyle, and unique health needs.
This relationship enables:
- Early detection of potential health issues.
- Personalized advice and treatment plans.
- Coordinated care with specialists if needed.
- A trusted source for discussing sensitive health concerns.
Taking Action
Men’s Health Week 2025 is a call to action: prioritize your health by establishing a relationship with a regular GP. Don't wait until something is seriously wrong. Preventative care is about staying ahead of potential health issues and maintaining overall wellbeing.
If you're unsure where to start, ask friends or family for recommendations, or research local clinics to find a GP who suits your needs. Book a check-up, even if you feel fine, to establish a health baseline and open the lines of communication.
To the women reading this: your encouragement can make a significant difference. Support the men in your life by promoting the importance of regular GP visits and being proactive about health.
